Dr. Johnson graduated from Mercer School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine Residency at ETSU, Bristol. He spent the first twelve years of his career in private practice in Hiawassee, GA where he was the founding member of a three physician group providing full hospital, nursing home and clinic care.

He is triple board certified in Family Medicine, Palliative Medicine and Integrative Medicine. For the last 8 years he served as the Medical Director for Erlanger Serious Illness Care, where he practiced Integrative Palliative care for the most critically ill. He has been an active associate professor of clinical medicine at UTC since March, 2014.

He is passionate about time in the outdoors with his amazing wife and two teenage sons. He is an enthusiast for spiritual formation, inner life discovery, personal development and physical vibrance which are the core components of true Vitality. And, he is passionate about vibrant wellness.

I am a Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) and a 2023 graduate of the North Greenville University Physician Assistant program. Before medical school, my educational background was in Recreational Therapy, an alternative treatment modality that utilizes leisure activities to improve the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals. I have been a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) since 2015. I also previously held other certifications in my professional life, including Certified Nursing Assistant and Wilderness First Responder. These certifications offered numerous opportunities to work with amazing children, youth, and adults of varying abilities in home health care and outdoor adventure settings.

My career dream is to combine my medical degree with my recreation background, entrepreneurial spirit, love for people of all backgrounds and abilities, alternative medicine, nature, and adventure to help facilitate greater health and well-being for individuals in both a medical and therapeutic way, while upholding human dignity and patient autonomy to encourage collaborative and goal-oriented care. My mindset has always been that health encompasses a person’s spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, social, and environmental wellness. Healing is an interconnected process unique to everyone, and I enjoy supporting others in that journey toward health and wholeness.

In addition to recreation and outdoor adventure, some of my other passions include family, building healthy relationships, serving people with disabilities, and daily cultivating authenticity, emotional depth, play, and laughter. In my downtime, I enjoy immersing myself fully into God’s glorious creation - particularly in the mountains among the trees and rivers, hiking, and learning about the regional flora and fauna. My goal is to see all the National Parks! I also appreciate spending quality time with loved ones, writing, traveling, and experiencing new cultures. So far, I have had the privilege of visiting Togo and Nicaragua for short-term mission work. I hope to travel to more countries in the future.

Since I moved around a lot in my youth and young adult life, having a strong sense of community is very important to me. I am excited to call East TN my home and continue exploring more of what this area has to offer. Ultimately, I would love to own a plot of land to forage, farm, garden, and grow herbs!

In summary - I am a helpful, people-loving, tree-hugging “hippie” by nature; nomadic explorer by family default; CTRS and PA-C by training; healthcare/medical, holistic wellness, and recreation professional by choice. Charity Shultz has been passtionate about holistic health for over 20 years studying all aspects of whole body healing with certifications in Nutrition Response Testing, Holistic Health Coaching, Cancer Prevention Coaching, and Emotional Healing Techniques. Charity completed her Traditional Naturopathic Doctorate from Rockwell School of Holistic Medicine.

For the last 4 years, Charity has brought holistic healing modalities to the East Tennessee region with her team at the Holistic Wellness Center of Morristown & more recently also in Maryville.

When Charity is not at the clinic, you will most likely find her spending time with her 11 children or outside grounding with a book!
